About the Book

As a certified diabetes educator, I have used tumble stones throughout my career as a tool to help individuals with their diabetes self-management plan and goal-setting.  The stones serve as a simple reminder to help them stay on tract. I suggest that my patients carry their stone with them. Every time they see their stone or touch it in their pocket, it will take them back to their diabetes plan and what they need to do to improve their control and, as a result, enhance the quality of their life.

This book has been written to empower children to believe in themselves whether dealing with a chronic disease or just dealing with everyday stress. The purpose of the stone is to remind children of the steps they need to take in order to manage their chronic disease. Goal setting, support, and follow up, are the key elements that facilitate behavior change. It is my hope that every child will discover their own magic and believe in the power they possess to make changes that improve their life.

The stone will be a simple reminder of the magic that is in each one of us to create change and to improve our lives.  Good luck!

Donna Rice Testimonial

My name is Rick, and I have diabetes. Changing my behavior did make dealing with my diabetes significantly better, but changing my behavior and my habits has not been easy. In the beginning, I found myself constantly going back to my old eating habits and found it more and more difficult to exercise. I started gaining weight and I began to struggle with complications from my diabetes.

A number of years ago I attended a class series on diabetes and Donna Rice was my diabetes educator. She showed us a box of tumble stones. We were asked to pick out a stone that was special, and to carry it with us or keep it in a place where we would see it each day. The purpose of the stone was to remind us about our diabetes management and all that we have accomplished up to that moment.

It has been ten years and I have been managing my diabetes successfully most of the time. I still carry the stone in my pocket and it is a reminder of why I need to continue to control my diabetes. I know that the strength to change actually came from within me, but the stone in my pocket has always been there to help remind me that I have to find and build that strength.
